Week 10: Sketches Galore (Makiyah Harris)

Character Design

This week, I decided to pivot towards the art side of things to finalize some character designs. Chief among these designs was Miren’s, whose sketches I’d previously started. After rewriting some parts of the story, I wanted to create a design that suited her revised character more. I started by sketching a few outfit ideas. I wanted to keep the V shapes from the earlier sketches,  so I incorporated sharp angles into the clothing folds and necklines of each of the four outfit options. After getting some feedback, I settled on option A and moved onto potential color schemes. I wanted Miren’s colors to contrast those of the antagonists, so I ended up choosing the third option.

I used a similar process to design the bandit. Starting with a moodboard of reference images, I created three different outfit concepts. I wanted this character to look roguish and a bit disheveled. I ended up choosing option C; I liked the idea of the bandit looting bits and pieces of armor from felled enemies. I created color variants for this character as well.

Lastly, I began sketching Oriel, another side character who will appear in the second part of our demo. Her personality is similar to Miren’s first incarnation, so I’m considering recycling one of her old designs.
